日本、そして地球上の野生植物を絶滅から守るためのパートナーシップ

日本には、約7,000種の野生植物が生育し、そのうちの4割が日本だけに見られる固有種です。この豊かな日本の植物相は、世界的に誇られるものであり、その一方で、日本人の生活が古くから植物と密接に関わってきたことの裏づけにもなっています。

しかし今日、開発行為、採取、そして人々の生活様式の変化などによって、日本の野生植物の絶滅、そして生物多様性の損失が、深刻な問題となっています。すでに20種は絶滅、そして4種に1種が絶滅の危機に直面しています。

植物の保全、研究、教育、そして憩いの場として、植物に関するもっとも総合的な機関である植物園は、今こそその重要性と役割を発揮すべき時代を迎えたと言えるでしょう。BGCIは、地球上の野生植物を守るために、世界の植物園のネットワークを組織する団体です。 2004年にスタートした「Investing in Nature - ジャパン」 プログラムをきっかけに、BGCIは日本ともパートナーシップを結び、植物園やその他の機関・団体と協力して、国内の野生植物の保全を推進するために活動を行っています。
