Consultation on Target 14 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation

Between 2004 – 2005, various consultation procedures were undertaken on Target 14, including:

  • A consultation document was sent to major international organisations such as BGCI garden members and educators, botanic garden networks, IUCN CEC, WWF, UNESCO, CBD secretariat, UNEP and DEFRA. This requested discussion of a draft series of recommendations through which measurable targets in education, communication and public awareness can be set to act as indicators and milestones towards the achievement of the targets of the GSPC by 2010.
  • Workshops held in Romania, New Zealand and Canada by local plant conservation networks, resulting in report production.
  • Survey and consultation with BGEN – Botanic Gardens Education Network, UK
  • A workshop was held at the 2nd World Botanic Gardens Congress, April 2004 where the practicalities of national sub targets were discussed.

In 2006, under the auspices of BGCI, six national meetings were convened for stakeholders working in plant-based education, communication and public awareness to focus on the implementation of Target 14. The meetings were held in:

Over 375 representatives from all levels of the formal and informal education sectors participated in the consultation.

The combined findings of all these consultations and meetings were used to produce the ‘International Review of Target 14 of the GSPC’, which was presented at a meeting of the Global Partnership for Plant Conservation and the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity in Dublin, November, 2006.
