Using Garden Search

BGCI's Garden Search gives free public access to our searchable database of over 2500 gardens.

You can search by country, plus you can see who is a BGCI Member, who has registered with the IABGC and more.

The database gives contact information but you can also find out about plant collections, facilities, education programmes and much more. Links can also be found to articles in our archives involving the garden in question. The Garden Search also includes gene banks and botanic garden network organisations.

How To Search

There are two routes for searching the Garden database. These can be used separately, or together.

  • The first is to enter a keyword or two, as specific and unique as possible. You do not have to choose a country - you can simply enter 'Atlanta' or 'palms' or 'Dunham' and the Search will show you any garden that has any of the words you gave in its record.
  • The other way is to select a country and then either use a keyword or just get a list back of all the gardens in that country.
  • Notice also you can use the check boxes to filter your list of results to show BGCI Members or gardens that have signed the International Agenda.

More Tips

  • Many gardens have special collections, and information about this is in the database and is searchable. So if you want to find gardens that hold collections of Juglandaceae you can type that as a keyword and you will get a list of gardens that report such a collection.
  • The Garden Search is not included in the Site Search. So if you type 'Atlanta Botanic Garden' into our Site Search you will not get to the Garden database record for that garden. You have to use the Garden Search for that.

Update it Yourself

If you work in a botanic garden, you can apply for a login so you can edit the records yourself. Find your garden and look for the 'Edit This Garden' button on the right.

Gardens are invited to use these pages as their own. Staff at a garden can enter information by logging in to our website.

BGCI Plant Search Database
The BGCI plant search allows you to research plants in living collections all around the world. It gives cross-referenced information with Red Data Lists, plant images, the International Plant Names Index, Crop Wild Relatives, and the Tree Conservation Database.
