Botanic Gardens and Horticultural Expert - Oman Botanic GardenOMAN BOTANIC GARDEN The Oman Botanic Garden is to be established on a 425 hectare site near Muscat. The flora of Oman will be displayed as natural habitats, including those of both northern and southern Oman that will need to be grown in especially designed conservatories. Incorporating the Arabic culture of Oman, the botanic Reserve will be a unique and extremely important tourism and conservation project for the Middle East. The Masterplan for the project was done by an international consultant and the detailed design has commenced with a team that includes Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The design for the nursery has already been completed and construction is to start soon. BGCI is working on the project as a consultant. To date, four of the Omani managers have already been employed along with more than 10 support staff. They have assisted in both the field collections and the production of the 34,000 plants that have grown to date. The RoleThe purpose of this position is to provide the leadership and experience needed to expand the OBG's living collection. It will involve the development of the Reserve's Nursery and the landscaping of the habitats, as well as the further development the Reserve's Collection Policy. The training/mentoring of Omani staff will be a very important part of this position. It is expected that this position will commence operation from October, 2007 and will be a five year contract.
