Education and Public Awareness

One of BGCI's key work areas is in education (click here to visit the BGCI Education Portal) Botanic gardens and related institutions are in a powerful position to influence public thinking. Over 200 million people visit botanic gardens every year, about one in 33 of all people in the world. That is a huge audience, and with consistent, relevant messages, botanic gardens have an incredible opportunity to change behaviour and promote plant biodiversity.

Work under the U.S. strategy aims to:

  1. Complete formal evaluation of middle school curriculum developed by BGCI U.S. after consultation with U.S. botanic garden education staff, and make final curriculum widely available in the U.S. through member organizations.

  2. Partner with the Association of Zoological Horticulture to grow opportunities for botanic gardens and zoos to participate in Plant Conservation Day

  3. Raise public awareness and support for global plant conservation in the U.S. by developing materials and programs that botanical gardens can easily use to communicate the importance of plants, the need for plant conservation, and memorable stories of the important work already underway to their visitors.
