Medicinal Plants Questionnaire - Your Input Needed!

BGCI's medicinal plant conservation project is well underway. We have identified several thousand key medicinal plant species and are busy updating the PlantSearch database to contain this information.

Next Stage

The next stage of our project is a wider consultation exercise, designed to gather informed opinion and help channel resources for medicinal plant conservation within botanic gardens. We are asking for all those involved in medicinal plants to complete a brief, non-binding questionnaire.

Creating a Guide for Botanic Gardens

Galanthus spp. Following the long standing use of snowdrops in a remote part of Europe to ease headaches, research led to the isolation of the alkaloid galatamine, now used to treat Alzheimer's disease and other neurological conditions.

The responses we receive will feed into the production of a report and guide for botanic gardens.

The report aims to provide advice to botanic gardens on how they can implement successful medicinal plant conservation projects, both in situ and ex situ.

Your Input

It will do this via case studies and best practice and the input of experienced individuals, via the questionnaire.

  • Do you work with medicinal plants?
  • Does your institution run any projects with medicinal plants?
  • What do you think the key issues are surrounding medicinal plant conservation for the botanic garden community?
