International Banana Conference 2008

RESCHEDULED to October 5-9, 2008

MOMBASA, KENYA

Banana 2008The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in collaboration with FARA, Bioversity, ISHS and KARI, is organizing an Africa-based conference that will focus on "banana and plantain research across Africa: lessons learnt and the way forward"

The Conference has been rescheduled for October 5-9, 2008, due to the election violence in Kenya. If violence continues, the Conference will take place in Kampala, Uganda. All the latest information is available from www.banana2008.com

Fostering international partnerships is a major objective of the conference, with particular emphasis to establish the role of research in promoting future commercial activities and trade in banana, plantain and ensete. There is an urgent need to target basic and applied research that connects to existing and emerging markets. This unique conference will be the first pan-African meeting to link research to markets in an African context.

Key Priorities

  1. Develop an African strategy for the next decade to exploit banana and plantain research
  2. Strengthen research partnerships to overcome production bottlenecks
  3. Harmonize research with production trends, emerging markets and trade networks

Themes

The conference will focus on three major themes:

  • markets and trade
  • production
  • innovation systems
Each theme will consist of a plenary session featuring keynote and invited speakers, breakout sessions to cover a broader range of key topics within the theme, in addition to special discussion forums (see "special sessions") to promote dialogue and an interactive environment. Further interaction will be stimulated by comprehensive poster sessions and field visits.
