Tree Seeds 2008 – Trees, Seeds and a Changing climate

22 – 25 September 2008

MILLENNIUM SEED BANK PROJECT, SUSSEX, UK

The theme of this meeting is how a changing climate impacts on trees and their seeds. We will have themes covering: climate models and predicted impacts; abiotic and biotic stress; tropical and temperate seed biology; and applied aspects, including biotechnology and conservation.

To enable more time for participants, we have extended the abstract submission deadline from 28 February to 28 March.

About the Conference

Forests are disappearing at an alarming rate, and with them are lost a wide range of goods and services, such as carbon capture, fuelwood, medicines, biodiversity, timber, water catchment, food security and cultural values. In addition, trees support ecological niches for other species. Many tree species also have high use value as food (mainly oilseeds and nuts). However, in general the seeds of trees are under-researched. Moreover, seed quality at harvest is linked to environmental conditions, making seeds valuable 'sensors' of climate change.

The impact of climate change on tree seed quality, tree distribution, pathogens and conservation was a major concern at the last meeting held in Canada (2006). Consequently, the purpose of this meeting is to showcase recent advances in tree seed biology, in particular those aspects of relevance to understanding, predicting and coping with climate change impacts.

We look forward to seeing you in Sussex in September 2008.

Millennium Seed Bank Project
The Millennium Seed Bank Project is an international collaborative plant conservation initiative. This worldwide effort aims to safeguard 24,000 plant species from around the globe against extinction. It has already successfully secured the future of virtually all the UK's native flowering plants.

Global Trees Campaign
Over 8000 tree species, 10% of the world’s total, are threatened with extinction. The Global Trees Campaign is addressing the problems with help from botanic gardens and BGCI.
Seeds - Time Capsules of Life
Rob Kessler, artist, and Wolfgang Stuppy seed morphologist at the Millennium Seed Bank, have produced a lavishly illustrated natural history of seeds, their evolution, and dispersal. Enhanced electron microscope images give breathtaking detail, making this a great gift for the botanist in your life.
