Access and Benefit Sharing: Good Practice for Academic Research on Genetic Resources
11th July 2008
'Access and Benefit Sharing - Good Practice for Academic Research on Genetic Resources', published by the Swiss Academy of Sciences in 2006, is now available in French and Spanish. The brochure offers easy to understand information about the issue of access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits resulting from their use, according to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The tool is specifically tailored to the academic research context (i.e. non-commercial research). It delineates the necessary steps that scientists should consider when acquiring organisms or parts thereof (genetic resources) from other countries for their research purposes. The booklet also contains case-studies, check-lists, contract elements and options for benefit sharing from an academic research perspective. The good practice text was originally written for scientists working in Switzerland, but the information is also applicable to researchers working in other countries. The Swiss Academy of Sciences maintains a website on ABS and academic research. There, you can find additional information and a download section with PDF-files of the Good Practice publication in English, French and Spanish. |
